A white noise machine is a device that produces a noise that calms the listener, which in many cases sounds like a rushing waterfall or wind blowing through trees, and other serene or nature-like sounds. Often such devices do not produce actual white noise, which has a harsh sound, but pink noise, whose power rolls off at higher frequencies, or other colors of noise.
Use[edit]
White noise devices are available from numerous manufacturers in many forms, for a variety of different uses, including audio testing, sound masking, sleep-aid, and power-napping. Sleep-aid and nap machine products may also produce other soothing sounds, such as music, rain, wind, highway traffic and ocean waves mixed with—or modulated by—white noise. As an alternative to white noise machines, many Westerners will use a fan to help get to sleep. According to a recent Gallup Poll up to 80% of Westerners will use a fan to help get to sleep.[citation needed] Whereas many Asian communities will not use a fan due to the superstition that a fan can suffocate them while sleeping. White noise generators are often used by people with tinnitus to mask their symptoms. The sounds generated by digital machines are not always truly random. Rather, they are short prerecorded audio-tracks which continuously repeat at the end of the track.
Manufacturers of sound-masking devices recommend that the volume of white noise machines be initially set at a comfortable level, even if it does not provide the desired level of privacy. As the ear becomes accustomed to the new sound and learns to tune it out, the volume can be gradually increased to increase privacy. Manufacturers of sleeping aids and power-napping devices recommend that the volume level be set slightly louder than normal music listening level, but always in a comfortable listening range.

Sound and noise have their own measurement and color coding techniques, which allows specialized users to identify noise and sound according to their respective needs and utilization. These specialized needs are dependent on certain professions and needs, e.g. a psychiatrist who needs certain sounds for therapies and treatments on a mental level, and patients who have conditions such as insomnia, anxiety, and, tinnitus (these conditions are managed with special devices which are designed to create certain sounds that treat such conditions at a mental level). A white noise machine has “white” as the color code given to that noise having a particular frequency spectrum.
Audio jammers[edit]
White noise machines are used to diminish the potential for recording or overhearing conversations. RepublicanGlen Casada had a white noise machine installed in his office to prevent against eavesdropping.[1]
Smart speaker blockers have been developed. For example, Bracelet of Silence is a bracelet that outputs white noise to protect privacy against digital recording from smart speakers.[2] Bracelet of Silence is portable and not attached to smart speakers, thus it is possible that this device can be used to prevent eavesdropping of other devices as well, for example smartphones and laptops.
There is not a lot of research on the impact of loud sounds at inaudible frequencies (and their respective audible artifacts and harmonics).[3]

Design[edit]
Most modern white noise generators are electronic, usually generating the sound in real-time with audio test equipment, or via electronic playback of a digital audio recording. Toki 1 14. Simple mechanical machines consist of a very basic setup, involving an enclosed fan and, optionally, a speed switch. This fan drives air through small slots in the machine's casing, producing the desired sound.

Welcome to Noises Online!
Noise isn't always the chatty colleague in your open-plan office, or the sound of your tinnitus when you go to sleep. Though the word 'noise' has acquired a negative connotation, it can be beautiful, such as the sound of the ocean, the rain, or a field in the summer.
The idea behind an online background noise machine like this website, is to make use of the noises you like to mask the noises you dislike. The concept is simple, works extremely well, and does not require expensive equipment, such as active noise cancelling headphones.
Because these noises are available through a web browser, you can pick the sounds you like the best. You can adjust their relative levels to achieve perfectly well-balanced background noise to boost your productivity, increase your focus, deepen your meditation session, or fall asleep at night. The uses of a noise machine are extremely varied!
Noises Online differs from other background noise generators by its pristine audio quality and the variety of sounds available from one single web page. These sounds are original recordings – not stock sounds – taken from my sampling sessions for myNoise, another website of mine. myNoise is probably the best background noise generator on the internet. It offers an unsurpassed number of noises and is second to none for customizing sound. It even takes your hearing thresholds into account! It's complexity and cluttered user interface may discourage the newcomer though. This is how Noises Online came to life: as a much simpler alternative to myNoise, offering the same audio quality through the easiest user interface one can think of.
Noises Online is free to use, but it isn't free for me to maintain. Development and support costs aside, I have to pay the hosting fees and the expenses of using a content delivery network (CDN) which replicates all my audio files to the server nearest to you. This means the website loads as fast as possible. This service has a much higher cost than regular hosting. If you like my work and want to support Noises Online, consider making a donation at myNoise. As I am running both sites, one supports the other. Plus, you will be granted lifetime privileged access to myNoise, which – I am sure – you'll enjoy too!
With passion and love,
